Housewarming Gifts for the First Week in a New Home

The best housewarming gifts are things a new homeowner can put to work in the first week: a bird bath for the yard, a set of knobs for a tired kitchen, a purifier or humidifier for the bedroom. This list keeps to the lower price tiers in our data, one pick per brand, so it covers the porch, the kitchen and the bedroom. I'm Ana Pruitt. I've been to a lot of housewarmings, and I have carried a great many casseroles up a great many porch steps.

Notes on each pick

01

AEOCKY 1096 ft² Turbo-Jet Air Purifier

Good for a bedroom or an open living area. The listing states coverage up to 1,096 sq ft, CARB certification, a no-ozone claim and a washable pre-filter.

Skip it if they want a CADR number to compare: the listing doesn't give one, and the title calls its filter proprietary, so replacements come from this maker.

Check price
02

Afloia 4-Stage Air Purifier, 1500 Sq Ft

Good for a bedroom where noise matters. The listing states a 22 dB sleep mode, coverage up to 1,500 sq ft, a washable pre-filter and a 2/4/8/16-hour timer.

Skip it if CARB certification is a must for you: it isn't stated in our data, and neither is a CADR.

Check price
03

AIRTOK 4-In-1 Air Purifier

Good for a bedroom or office. The listing states an H13 HEPA filter, a 25 dB noise level, CARB certification, an ozone-free claim and a night light.

Skip it if the person dislikes scents (the title includes fragrance sponges) or if you need a room size: our data doesn't list one.

Check price
04

Alpine Corporation TEC116

Good for a first bird bath on a new lawn. The listing gives a 28-inch plastic pedestal with scrollwork in an aged green finish.

Skip it if they want open water all winter in a cold area: it isn't listed as heated.

Check price
05

API (Allied Precision Industries) 400

Good for a yard where water freezes in winter. The listing states a heated plastic pedestal bath with a 12-inch bowl and a UL electrical listing.

Skip it if there's no outdoor outlet near where the bath would stand: a heated bath needs power.

Check price
06

Audubon NA32350

Good for a porch, a small yard or a renter, since it hangs instead of standing. The listing gives a 12-inch resin bowl.

Skip it if there's no sturdy branch, hook or bracket to hang it from yet.

Check price
07

Aspects Quick-Clean 395

Good for someone who wants a simple seed feeder to start a feeder habit. The listing gives a tube feeder with 4 ports, and the Quick-Clean name is the maker's.

Skip it if they have no hook or pole yet: our data doesn't list a mount, so plan on buying one.

Check price
08

Audubon Park Woodinville 51851

Good for a small first feeder. The listing describes a single suet basket, a grid feeder 5 3/4 inches tall.

Skip it if they'd rather not buy suet cakes: it holds suet, not loose seed.

Check price
09

Birds Choice Classic

Good for a homeowner who wants the whole setup in one box. The listing includes a 5 ft 8 in steel pole and a baffle, a 5 lb seed capacity and 4 aluminum ports, and names cardinals, chickadees and woodpeckers. The title calls it "squirrel proof"; that's the listing's claim.

Skip it if they rent or can't set a pole in the ground.

Check price
10

Birdkiss Glass Hummingbird Feeder, 4 Ports

Good for a hummingbird feeder that looks good on a porch. The listing gives a hand-blown glass feeder holding 20 oz with 4 ports, an ant moat, a hanging hook and a leak-proof claim.

Skip it if the new owner would rather not wash glass at the sink twice a week in summer.

Check price
11

FIRST NATURE 993091-546

Good for a yard where hummingbirds already visit. The listing gives a 16 oz plastic flower feeder with 10 ports, an ant moat and a wide mouth for cleaning.

Skip it if they're new to hummingbirds: a big feeder means pouring out nectar nobody drank.

Check price
12

Heath Outdoor Products Clementine CF-133

Good for a yard on an oriole route. The title gives a powder-coated steel Clementine oriole feeder for orange halves and jelly.

Skip it if they've never seen an oriole where they live.

Check price
13

Amerdeco K0002

Good for refreshing a whole kitchen at once. The listing gives 25 single-hole T-bar knobs in oil-rubbed bronze.

Skip it if the cabinets have two-hole pulls now: a single-hole knob leaves the second hole showing.

Check price
14

Amerock Edona

Good for a kitchen or bath with round knobs to replace. The listing gives a 25 pack of 1 1/4-inch round zinc knobs in oil-rubbed bronze.

Skip it if they have not settled on a finish yet: finish names differ between makers, so one sample first is safer.

Check price
15

Asidrama Satin Nickel Knobs, 10 Pack

Skip it if the kitchen has more than 10 doors and drawers that take a knob.

Check price

Good for a few drawers with a garden theme, such as a potting bench or a mudroom. The listing gives a twig-shaped zinc pull, 3-inch center-to-center, 4 1/2 inches overall, with a 1 1/4-inch projection, in aged bronze.

Skip it if the existing holes aren't 3 inches apart, and check how many come in the box: our data lists no pack count.

Check price
17

Check price
18

Emtek 86322US10B

Good for someone who already knows they want this model. The listing names it the Emtek Cadet in oil-rubbed bronze.

Skip it if you need sizes to match existing holes: our data doesn't list center-to-center or length, so check the listing first.

Check price
19

BigMouth Inc Got Nuts

Good for a light-hearted piece for the front bed. The listing gives a resin garden statue called Got Nuts.

Skip it if the new owner's taste runs quiet and formal.

Check price
20

Bits and Pieces Solar Dog Lantern Boston Terrier

Good for a Boston Terrier household. The listing gives a 13.5-inch resin dog with a solar-powered LED lantern.

Good for a ledge, a low wall or a wide porch rail. The title gives a 19-inch fairy in cast stone resin, made to sit on a shelf or edge.

BONECO S250

Good for one room up to 480 sq ft, per the listing, with no filter to buy. It's a steam (warm mist) model with an essential-oil option.

Skip it if toddlers or pets could reach it: a steam humidifier heats water to make its mist.

Housewarming gifts that get used the first week

A new house comes with a long list and a short budget. The gifts that land are the ones that cross something off the list without adding a chore.

That's the idea behind this page. Every pick does one job in one part of the house, and each one has a reason in the notes above that comes from what the maker or the Amazon listing states. No pick is here because it photographs well.

The list is built by a rule, and the rule is in the box at the top of the table: porch and yard pieces, cabinet hardware, and clean air and water gear, kept to the lower price tiers in our data. One pick per brand, and no more than three of any one kind. That last part keeps the list from turning into a wall of air purifiers.

I sort gift lists the way I sort a library cart: by where the thing ends up. So the sections below go room by room.

Porch and yard: baths, feeders and a little decor

A yard is the part of a new house most people have not gotten to yet. Inside, there are boxes to unpack. Outside, there's a lawn and a lot of quiet. A bird bath or a feeder fills that quiet with something to watch from the kitchen window.

Mississippi State University Extension says birds need food, water and cover, and suggests one or two feeders and a bird bath to start. That's a gift list right there.

Bird baths

The baths in the table cover different yards.

Extension advice is to keep a bath clean and full, and in winter to keep it from freezing with a heater or a heated bath. If you're giving the heated one, find out first whether there's an outdoor outlet within reach of a good spot, and follow the maker's instructions for the cord.

Feeders

The seed feeders are different ideas. A tube feeder with 4 ports for loose seed. A small suet basket. And a full kit with a pole, a baffle and a 5 lb seed tube. A baffle is a dome or tube on the pole that blocks squirrels.

My one strong opinion about feeders goes double for a housewarming: buy for the birds they already see, not the bird on the box. Seed type and port size decide who shows up. A new homeowner hasn't had time to notice yet, so ask them what's at the neighbor's feeder. (Mine would answer "the Admiral", and he is not a bird.)

Field note: a feeder is a cleaning commitment. Clemson Cooperative Extension suggests cleaning seed feeders about every two weeks, more often in heavy use or wet weather. If your friend has a new baby and a new mortgage, a suet basket asks less of them than a 5 lb tube.

Hummingbird and oriole feeders

There are nectar feeders in the list too: a hand-blown glass feeder holding 20 oz, a plastic flower feeder holding 16 oz with 10 ports, and a steel Clementine feeder made for orioles, which takes orange halves and jelly per its title. An ant moat, which some of the listings name, is a small cup of water above the feeder that ants can't cross.

A nectar feeder asks more of a new owner than a seed tube. Clemson Cooperative Extension advises fresh sugar water twice a week, more often in warm weather. For someone still unpacking boxes, that's worth a word before you wrap it.

Yard decor

The resin pieces include a 19-inch fairy made to sit on a ledge, a 13.5-inch Boston Terrier with a solar lantern, and a statue called Got Nuts. Decor is the one category where taste beats specs. I'll only say this: the Boston Terrier is a gift for a Boston Terrier household. Nobody else needs to explain it to the neighbors.

Kitchen and bath: knobs and pulls

New hardware is the quickest way to make an old kitchen feel like yours. It's also a gift that can go wrong in a very specific way: the holes.

Pulls have two screws. The distance between them, measured from the middle of one hole to the middle of the other, is called center-to-center. If the new pulls don't match the old holes, someone is drilling new ones and filling the old. Some of the pulls in the table give 3 inches center-to-center, and the listings say so.

Knobs are simpler. They take one screw, so they fit almost any door that has one hole. But a single-hole knob on a door that used to have a two-hole pull leaves an empty hole for company.

Here's how the hardware picks break down:

Before you buy, count the doors and drawers. A 10 pack covers a bathroom vanity. A 25 pack might cover a small kitchen. My son-in-law Ken counts everything in a kitchen before he buys a single screw, and he has a guide to cabinet pull sizes that will tell you more than you wanted to know.

Finish names belong to each maker. Oil-rubbed bronze from one brand may not match oil-rubbed bronze from another. If they're replacing only half the kitchen, that matters.

Clean air and water: purifiers and humidifiers

This is Dell's half of the house. He spent 34 years in other people's attics and crawl spaces, and he still reads the label on the back of every box before the front.

Air purifiers

The purifiers in the table state a room size, a noise level or a certification in the listing. What none of their listings gives is a CADR, the clean air delivery rate, which is a lab number for how fast a purifier cleans a room's air. That's why the notes say so.

Dell's take: "Check the room size, then check for the CARB line. If a listing doesn't say it, it isn't said."

He means the California Air Resources Board. CARB requires portable indoor air cleaners sold in California to be certified to its ozone and electrical safety standards. Not every purifier here states CARB certification in its listing, and the notes say which ones do. For more on where a purifier works best, there's a guide to where to place an air purifier.

Humidifiers

The humidifiers are different types. One is a whole-house console, rated for 3,700 sq ft. One is an evaporative bedroom model with app controls. One is a steam model for a single room up to 480 sq ft.

An evaporative humidifier pushes air through a wet wick. There's no visible mist, and the wick gets replaced on the maker's schedule. A steam humidifier heats water and needs no filter, but it runs hot. That's the choice in a sentence.

The EPA suggests keeping indoor humidity below 60 percent, ideally between 30 and 50 percent. A humidifier is a gift for a house that runs dry in winter. Ask before you buy one for a house that doesn't.

What about water filters?

You won't find any in this list, on purpose. Replacement filter cartridges fit only the system they were made for, so they make a poor surprise. If the new owner asks for one, ask for the exact model of their pitcher, faucet unit or cooler first. And if they're on a well, the EPA advises testing private well water every year. A test comes before any filter.

New homeowner gifts: what the first month actually needs

New homeowner gifts and closing gifts are the same idea with different timing. A closing gift comes the day the keys change hands. A housewarming gift comes once the boxes are open. Either way, the gift that helps most is one that fits a gap.

Here's how I'd match a gift to a new house:

Ken has a full new home checklist that covers the less giftable items, like finding the water shutoff. And if you want a gift that's more tool than treat, the new home essentials list leans that way.

Housewarming gifts for men, couples and parents

I'll be plain about this, since the searches are: nobody's hardware drawer is sorted by gender. A man who cooks wants knobs that match. A woman who fixes things wants the same.

For a couple, pick for the room they share most. That's often the bedroom, which points to a purifier with a listed sleep-mode noise level. For parents downsizing to a smaller house, a hanging bath or a suet basket asks less work than a pole feeder. For a dad who likes a project, a 25-pack of knobs is a Saturday.

Useful housewarming gifts and unique ones aren't opposites. The Boston Terrier lantern is unique, and it's also a light by the walk.

Who should skip this list

Not every new homeowner needs a thing from this table.

If they bought a house that came fully furnished and freshly redone, skip the hardware. If they're moving in July in a humid state, skip the humidifier. If they've said they don't want to feed birds, believe them, and skip the feeders too. A feeder is a promise to keep cleaning it.

And if you don't know them well, a gift card and a pan of something warm will do more than a pedestal bath they have to find a spot for. I have watched a lot of porch steps fill up with well-meant boxes.

How I picked

Each pick comes from the product data on this site, as of October 31, 2026. The list is drawn from bird baths, bird feeders, garden decor, cabinet knobs and pulls, hummingbird feeders, air purifiers and humidifiers. Replacement water filter cartridges are left out, since they only fit one system. It keeps to the lower price tiers in our data, takes one product per brand, and allows at most three of any one kind. The notes above say who each pick fits and when to skip it, using only what the maker or the Amazon listing states. No pick here was bought, set up or tried by anyone in the family.

Then the table goes out, and the casseroles go up the steps. Happy watching.

Questions people ask

What is a good housewarming gift?

Something the new owner can use the first week and doesn't have to store. A bird bath or feeder for the yard, a pack of cabinet knobs for a kitchen they plan to refresh, or an air purifier or humidifier for a bedroom all fit. Pick from what you know about the house: a yard, a kitchen with old hardware, a dry winter. The table above sorts each pick by kind.

What are practical housewarming gifts?

Gear that does a job in a room they already have. In this list that means knobs and pulls sold in packs of 10 or 25, an air purifier with a listed room size, or a humidifier with a listed coverage area and filter type. Practical also means the size fits: check the cabinet hole spacing or the room size before you buy.

What do you get someone who has everything for a housewarming?

Something for the part of the house they have not gotten to yet, which is usually the yard. A first bird bath or a feeder on its own pole gives them a new thing to watch rather than another thing to shelve. A small resin statue or a solar lantern is another option if they already have the birds covered.

Are personalized housewarming gifts a good idea?

They can be, but none of the picks on this page list a personalization option in our data. If you want a personal touch, choose by what you know about the person: a solar lantern shaped like their breed of dog, a finish that matches the hardware they already have, or a feeder for the birds they mention seeing.

What is a good outdoor housewarming gift?

A bird bath, a feeder or a piece of yard decor. In this list there's a 28-inch pedestal bath, a heated bath with a UL electrical listing, a 12-inch hanging bath, seed, suet and hummingbird feeders, and a few resin pieces. For more yard and porch picks, see our outdoor gifts page.
